This document attempts to give a hacker over-friendly answer to the question "What is Mac OS X?". My original motivation in writing this was that somebody had proxy-volunteered me to give a talk introducing Mac OS X to the Linux Users Group at my work place. While thinking over what to say to those folks, most (if not all) of whom are strangers to Mac OS X, I decided to write a supplementary document that they could refer to at their leisure.

Since I moved to Mac OS X, I have had a few discussions with people who are curious about Apple and Mac OS X, but have not used the platform. Often, what they think is a somewhat distorted, perhaps even incorrect version of the "truth": there are many areas in which they think the Mac is worse or better than it really is. Consider (with colloquialisms preserved):

• Macs are good only for graphics/media work.
• Macs suck for hackers.
• There is very little software for the Mac.
• Macs are overpriced/not worth the price.
• Mac OS X is Unix.
• Mac OS X is not Unix.
• Mac OS X rocks. Linux is crap.

There are times that I've been asked by some of my friends to attend to their dying pc with a hope that I could bring it back to life. Sadly I'm not blessed with so much free time and I'm not David Copperfield who can bring anyone's PC back into life with just a snap of his fingers. But I do manage to keep my own PC trouble free and running smoothly for a long time without the need of a total reincarnation. To help my friends and others, I made this basic guidelines of why, what to do and must have done on your personal computer.

It's a lot of fun surfing the net but for anything, do watch your surfing habits. The net is like a big forest full of nasty and wild intruders just waiting for you to make a mistake, so better watch out on what you're clicking or downloading. And don't blame other users for clicking that fancy mouse of yours. It's all your fault dude!

Now lets go to your great looking box. Your computer is like your home. And just like your home, you need to feel secure with it and make it clean and trouble free. And as a first line of defense, you need a basic reliable security toolbox. Knowing an anti-virus program will give your PC a total protection is a common misconception which is not entirely true at all times. There is a whole gang of bad guys out there just waiting for you to connect to the internet and they come in so many ways and flavors so you must have a combination of the right tools to give your PC the protection it deserves. To start with, you must make sure that your computer is loaded with the latest software updates. These updates are important to make your system runs smoothly and protected. And they come free from Microsoft so don't shy yourself with it. Microsoft OS's comes with its own firewall, which, for average users are sufficient but do make sure it's switched on. And, if you're using a  router' rather than a  modem' to connect to the internet you have extra firewall protection on top. Aren't you glad? Another must have for your box is a pop up blocker which aims to stop some nasty advertisers trying to slap some advertisements in your face, so make sure you have it. Google, Yahoo and MSN have free pop up blockers if you download their toolbars and if you are using Firefox to surf the internet, this does it automatically. But sometimes these pop-ups aren't from the website you're visiting, but are generated from a software that snuck into your system; this is called adware. And what about spyware? Spyware is a close relative of adware. Spyware covertly gathers information using your internet connection and passes it on to someone else. Even more fearsome, it can gather e-mail addresses, credit card details and passwords. They are usually transmitted when downloading freeware or shareware files.

To avoid these you must have an anti-adware or anti-spyware software. Luckily for you there are companies offering free alternatives for these kind of softwares for personal use. Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, Spybot - Search and Destroy, TrendMicro - CWShredder, AVG Anti- Spyware and Microsoft Windows Defender are just few of the most widely used that do a good job stopping these nasty hijackers. If you already got one make sure you are scanning your PC with it just like your anti virus, you need to turn it on and do a scan. Another area that you need to pay attention to is your e-mail. To give you some tips, never display images on your e-mail by default. Don't click on any e-mail if you don't know or trust the sender. And for goodness sake, stop sending me those chain e-mails and let your e-mail alone get harvested by someone else. Included with those tips of mine there's also a nifty tool that you might want to look at. NoSpyMail stop spams and spymail that gathers information about you and your e-mail habits. Now for cleaning your registry, CCleaner is a free software for that purpose, but do take note that it's not lightweight just because it's free.
